I decided to set up a Foundation whose purpose is to protect the environment and to encourage sustainable development (...). By definition, this is a common global challenge that requires urgent and concrete action in response to three major environmental issues: climate change, biodiversity and water.
35 international key figures concerned by the sea are meeting at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco on 31st March and 1st April with the support of the Sovereign Prince. Goal: to set up a brainstorming and action group for ocean protection.
NGOs and the international scientific community are increasingly alerting public opinion and decision makers on the rapid deterioration of our seas and oceans, partly due to global warming but also to overexploitation. The lack of co-ordination between the various stakeholders does not help to simplify matters.
By setting up a brainstorming and action group moderated by 35 international key figures, the Monaco Blue Initiative, supported by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and implemented by the Oceanographic Institute and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, will propose initiatives on the two main topics broached during the workshops:
-The deep sea: new biodiversity in need of protection. -Large marine species, a keystone of the marine ecosystems.
These key figures, concerned by the sea, will exchange their views on these issues on 31st March and 1st April. In the afternoon of the 1st, a session will be open to the public and will include the participation of Craig Venter, one of the pioneers of "artificial life” who has made a name for himself in human genome sequencing.
Programme for the public session on 1st April.
2.30 p.m. – 3.00 p.m. “Latest news on the Ocean” Dominique Leglu, Chief Editor of Sciences et Avenir
3 p.m. – 3.30 p.m.: “artificial life” Prof Craig Venter, President of the Venter Institute
3.30 p.m. – 4.30 p.m.: Plenary closing session and report-out by workgroups.
