I decided to set up a Foundation whose purpose is to protect the environment and to encourage sustainable development (...). By definition, this is a common global challenge that requires urgent and concrete action in response to three major environmental issues: climate change, biodiversity and water.
The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Award is presented to individuals who have made an exceptional commitment to save our planet. In keeping with its primary mission, the Foundation is keen to encourage and support those who successfully contribute towards the protection of the environment. The Foundation is offering them the opportunity to enjoy international recognition. Three award winners are selected each year for their exemplary action. A trophy specifically created for the event and prize money amounting to 40 000 Euros are presented to each of the winners personally by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.
On 21st February 2008, close to 1 000 people attended the first ever Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Award Ceremony. This exceptional event in the Grimaldi Forum brought together numerous representatives and ministers of the environment from over 150 countries, who were in Monaco for the 10th special session of the UNEP Global Ministerial Forum. H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco presented awards to three individuals internationally acknowledged for their work for the environment in each of the Foundation's priority fields of action:
Mr Alain Hubert for his efforts to raise global awareness of climate change and the promotion of renewable energy,
Dr Jane Goodall for the battle she has conducted for years to preserve biodiversity and the great apes, particularly in Africa,
Ms Sunita Narain for the exemplary action she undertakes in India to promote wider access to drinking water and to combat desertification.
On October 10th 2009, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco presented his Foundation's awards to three individuals in recognition of their actions to protect the planet. On that occasion, the world premiere of the film Océans was screened in presence of the movie crew.
This year, three young researchers have also been honoured for the quality of their work. By offering them three grants, the Foundation has wished to support them in their undertakings and help them carry out their research successfully; an essential element in the challenge for the planet's protection.
The 2009 edition was organized in partnership with:
